Hail To The King, Baby
By Andrew Menefee, Lodo Magazine, January 31st 2011
The concept of a salon for men is an interesting one considering that for generations past, the salon was a place reserved exclusively for women, a place where men did not want to go. Men have barbecues, fast muscle cars, dive bars, and strip clubs. What the Hell do we need salons for? We do not typically receive pedicures or manicures. We do not tan. We do not wax and most of us couldn't care less if our hair were cut with a set of clippers or a machete. However, a group of women in Arvada maintain an alarming cognizance of exactly how to pull men into an institution that has been accepted as being specifically for women since the salon was invented.
Their motto is, “Where Every Man Is King,” and it's printed on every single brochure stacked on the receptionist's counter. You'll be greeted with a smile upon entering by several women in lingerie. The initial experience is a touch surreal, though not much different from Hooters upon reflection. However, the girls at A Little Off The Top are much nicer than Hooters waitresses. The little salon is kept clean and fashionably masculine. The mirrors are framed with dark, stained wood to match the floor. The black leather couches are classy, and the flat screen television in the waiting area plays shows that cater to the male demographic. Services offered range from the standard buzz cut to a full on body massage by the licensed masseuses they keep on their staff. Dianna, one such masseuse, explained to LoDo Magazine that they've really had to make clear the professionalism they cultivate to both customers and the significant women in those customers' lives.
“I've talked to a lot of girlfriends and wives. Sometimes they come in with their men and we'll offer them a pedicure while they wait,” she explained. “We make sure everybody realizes that nothing bad or scandalous is going on, this is just a different kind of salon- one that caters to men.”
There's nothing wrong with a healthy admiration for the female form. Similarly, there's nothing wrong with offering grooming and massage services to men by taking advantage of that admiration. The women at A Little Off The Top are realistic entrepreneurs that know what will get them customers, and the services they offer are things that men should be getting anyway. A man's respect for his appearance is indicative of his respect for himself, and this respect or lack thereof is clear to those around him. At A Little Off The Top, the girls understand that a respectable man is going to want to look sharp, but no man wants to sit down and crack open the latest issue of O! Magazine while he gets his hair cut. So, the girls at A Little Off The Top get a little sexy and hook customers up with hot towel treatment and a shoulder rub as part of the hair cut package.
“We're all like one big family,” says Roberta. “We all work as a team, which is what makes this whole place run so smoothly. We support each other like sisters, and I think even the women that come in here with their husbands and boyfriends pick up on that, and everybody gets along.”
It really is good to be the king, and in a recessionary economic climate, in a country at war, there are precious few places where a man can just kick his feet up for an hour and be a king. There is no better place to do this than A Little Off The Top in Arvada and Aurora. The customer receives nothing but warm smiles and friendliness from the staff. The girls are confident and professional, which means customers should be the same. This isn't a sleazy spot for guys to get their hair cut with a hard on. It's classy, more reminiscent of a vaudeville show (with a whole lot more to offer in the way of practicality) than any sort of sleazy strip club, and the girls that work there deserve a great deal of respect for the innovation behind the idea, the professionalism they display while they work, and the friendliness they show to their customers. So, if you've ever seen an illustration of that Roman guy being fed grapes and fanned with a giant palm leaf, LoDo wants you to know that this is about as close as you're going to get to that fantasy in the twenty first century and there's no more charming a group of young women to make you feel like a king for an hour. So put your feet up, let yourself be pampered by a bunch of girls in their underwear, and enjoy the experience. Hail to the king, baby.

Massage therapy- the perfect solution for today's man
In the age of computers that will go anywhere, smart phones that do anything and technology that keeps us in touch with whomever we want, the one on one human experience is becoming less prevalent with each new day. Massage therapy offers a simple solution to ensure wellness for those who choose to utilize it. Touch is a natural human reaction to stress and pain, as well as for conveying compassion and support.
A Little off The Top specifically pinpoints men’s massage therapy by offering several forms of massage in a comfortable setting where a man can truly relax. Today’s man is faced with stress all day that comes in all forms. He has to worry about his career, the bills, family and health just to mention a few. Experts estimate that 80 to 90 percent of disease is stress related. Massage and bodywork is there to fight that horrific number, reminding us what it means to relax and bring balance into one’s life.
One of the biggest differences you will find from one massage venue to another is in the quality of service provider. A Little Off The Top prides it’s self on the quality of our Certified Massage Therapists. Our CMT’s are not just service providers but consultants as well meaning they will specify your session to what you are seeking combined with what your body calls for. Arvada therapist Kristelle boasts “I make it a personal goal that my client leaves our location feeling completely relaxed and that I can honestly say I did everything in my power to give him the very best massage for him”.
We now have scientific proof of the benefits of massage - benefits ranging from treating chronic diseases and injuries to alleviating the growing tensions of our modern lifestyles. Having a massage does more than just relax your body and mind - there are specific physiological and psychological changes which occur, even more so when massage is utilized as a preventative, frequent therapy and not simply mere luxury. Massage not only feels good, but it can cure what ails you.
Massage is a perfect elixir for good health, but it can also provide an integration of body and mind. By producing a meditative state or heightened awareness of living in the present moment, massage can provide emotional and spiritual balance, bringing with it true relaxation and peace.
The incredible benefits of massage are doubly powerful if taken in regular "doses." Dr. Maria Hernandez-Reif, from the Touch Research Institute (TRI) at the University of Miami, is known for her massage research, along with colleague Tiffany Field. Together, they and other researchers have done outstanding work proving the value of massage. While their studies have shown we can benefit from massage even in small doses (15 minutes of chair massage or a half-hour table session), Hernandez-Reif says they know from their research that receiving bodywork 2-3 times a week is highly beneficial. And if we lived in a fantasy world, Hernandez-Reif has the answer. "I feel a daily massage is optimal."
It's undoubtedly a wonderful thing when your therapist begins unwinding those stress-tightened muscles, and your day's troubles begin to fade away. But it's the cherry on top to know this "medicine" only gets better with frequency.
In an age of technical and, at times, impersonal medicine, massage offers a drug-free, non-invasive and humanistic approach based on the body's natural ability to heal itself. So what exactly are the benefits to receiving regular massage and/or bodywork treatments?
- Increases circulation, allowing the body to pump more oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs.
- Stimulates the flow of lymph, the body's natural defense system, against toxic invaders. For example, in breast cancer patients, massage has been shown to increase the cells that fight cancer.
- Increased circulation of blood and lymph systems improves the condition of the body's largest organ - the skin.
- Relaxes and softens injured and overused muscles
- Reduces spasms and cramping
- Increases joint flexibility.
- Reduces recovery time, helps prepare for strenuous workouts and eliminates subsequent pains of the athlete at any level.
- Releases endorphins - the body's natural painkiller - and is being used in chronic illness, injury and recovery from surgery to control and relieve pain.
- Reduces post-surgery adhesions and edema and can be used to reduce and realign scar tissue after healing has occurred.
- Improves range-of-motion and decreases discomfort for patients with low back pain.
- Relieves pain for migraine sufferers and decreases the need for medication.
- Provides exercise and stretching for atrophied muscles and reduces shortening of the muscles for those with restricted range of motion.
- Assists with shorter labor for expectant mothers, as well as less need for medication, less depression and anxiety, and shorter hospital stays.
Now that you have educated yourself on the benefits of massage therapy- it is time to book your appointment. A Little Off The Top is open 7 days week, 10am to 7pm Monday through Saturday and Sundays 11am to 6pm. We have 2 convenient locations in Aurora (north DTC) and Arvada. We always have therapist working offering Swedish, deep tissue, sports massage, trigger point, cranial, shiatsu, reflexology, energy work and hot stone massage. Locks of Love
Hi everyone! It is the season of giving and in honor of the holidays we would like to tell you about a wonderful client our ours- Drew. Drew is a dedicated client of our dear Cher. Drew is a sweet guy with long gorgeous hair...until recently. Drew was touched by an organization called "Locks of Love" and decided to donate his long, beautiful hair to the cause. Here is a brief description of "Locks of Love" taken from their website www.locksoflove.org.
Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. We meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. The prostheses we provide help to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers.
We are super proud of Drew for giving such a beautiful piece of himself to this cause. We must admit, cher did a great job of turning his beautiful long locks into a sexy short cut. We know he made some angel of a kid feel and look great with his "locks of love".

Mile High Sports Magazine's 2010 Snow Angels
Hi Everyone!
It's December in the Mile High City which usually means lots of snow. So far we haven't seen any snow but we sure did get to see some super sexy snow angels at Jackson's Bar and Grille on Saturday night. Mile High Sport's magazine is a Colorado based magazine that center's around local sports, news and events (http://milehighsports.com/sectional.asp?id=32182). Every winter MHS (Mile High Sports) puts out their annual "Snow Angels" issue in which Denver's hottest ladies tastefully display what their mama's gave them in sexy snow bunny type sets and outfits. The photographer for the issue is actually a good friend and regular photographer for A Little Off The Top, Mr. Jason Hayes of Hayes Photography (http://www.hayesfoto.com/). This year the reveal party for the issue was held at Jackson's bar and grille this past Saturday December 5th, 2010.
The weather was perfect for it being December in Colorado and your ALOTT girls were out in full force. We had Ally and Ty representing the Aurora salon, Dani, Diana and Lauren representing the Arvada salon, Amber, Tina and Angie from ALOTT corporate and even owner Nira was out and ready to heat up downtown Denver. The night started out with us waiting in a very long line just to get in the party but once we were in it was good time for all! Your girls were dancing and having a great time. It really was amazing to be able to spend some time away from the salons and just let loose. As the song says "Girls just wanna have fun". We really did have a great time and the staff from Mile High Sports couldn't have been more hospitable and welcoming to us.
Look out because you might just see some familiar faces in the 2011 Snow Angels issue...
